I came to Pilates for rehabilitation from injury. A background in dance, yoga and sport supported my early training and interest in the rehabilitation process making for a natural progression into Pilates, Somatic Movement and the fabulous spiralling work of Juliu Horvath.
With more than 30 years of personal practice and teaching in these methods, allied modalities and valuable lived experience in managing injury and chronic illness, I offer a diverse approach to the delivery of rehabilitation, using the amazing tools in my kitbag with multiple Somatic movement modalities to provide a wholistic yet focussed approach for injury rehabilitation, injury prevention and general conditioning.
This approach, applied for many years, has proved successful for myself and the many ME/CFS and FND people who have taken part in my lessons. I have both conditions. I manage both with stringent pacing and a combination of modalities, modifying each session as needed. Sure, I still crash because gosh when you get that bit of energy to do stuff it gets exciting and after 30 years I'm still learning. Some days it's simply breathwork, other days include movements. Those of you with ME and FND will get that.
The self-help book covering my ME and FND journey and the movements that helped me and the amazing people who trusted me to help, is due for publication late 2024. Contact if you wish to be on the mailing list for a copy of the book.
These methods are wonderful tools for maintaining optimal movement, preventing injury and are excellent for rehabilitation. While sometimes challenging they are fun and interesting. Making you think about how you use your body and explore your potential.
The work of Joseph Pilates and Juliu Horvath have been around for quite some time and are well proved to be excellent movement training methods with many adherents. If we use these modalities in your program it is going to be tailored to your needs because the Traditional work is not for everyone. The floor work in both, when broken down is fabulous for pre and rehab, and simply everyone. The equipment is another thing. Both great for pre and rehab under close supervision, both need specifically trained and licensed instructors. Do not accept anything less.
Somatics. Much of the movement programs I deliver are based on the work of Thomas Hanna with a liberal sprinkling from other modalities in my kitbag. In all, the focus on breath and stilling the mind encourages the use of existing ability, making work in each ideal for injury prevention or recovery, preparation for surgery, general conditioning and, in modified practice, maintaining condition for ME and FND people.
